The recent winter storm caused some of our community a significant amount of damage. Not only were our houses harmed by the weather, but we were also affected mentally and set back in work and school. However, just because this event took us by surprise, we can’t allow a repeat to occur when the summer conditions start to take a toll. As San Antonioians, we’re experienced with hotter temperatures, but our houses still need to be properly prepared to handle that.

The serious concern for homes during the summer months is wood rot. Specifically wood that is exposed to the elements, such as siding/stucco, patios/decks, and chimneys. It is also worth mentioning that you might experience paint failure, which will cause cracks which allows moisture to penetrate the wood, leading to peeling and wood rot.

Here is a list of things to consider fixing up:

– Pressure-wash your patio and driveway to remove dirt, mildew, and mold.
– Check up on your sprinkler system, make sure the pipes didn’t freeze over with the recent winter freeze.
– Check the exterior of your chimneys, eaves, fascia, and siding for wood rot or damages. We recommended – – getting those areas repaired and painted as soon as possible.
– Clean and refresh your deck to prepare spring and summer gatherings.
– Check gutters for build-up and any loose or damaged areas.
– Check weather stripping around doors and windows.
– And don’t forget these areas: fence posts, flower beds, bird baths, air-conditioners, roofs, and outdoor furniture.
